What are Allergy Eyes?

Posted on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 8:55 am

by Dorothy Medlum

Are you suffering from itchy, red, and irritated eyes? You have the symptoms of allergy eyes and these may be from a number of causes. Perhaps you had dinner with a friend in a smoky restaurant and that made your eyes begin to itch. Or, maybe you have been working for hours in front of the computer screen to complete an assignment. The most common reason for the symptoms you have is that you have allergy eyes.

A negative reaction to a substance can produce your allergy eyes. This condition can come from a number of allergens, some of these might include: pollen, dust mites, weeds, and grass exposure. The allergy eyes are most affected during the seasons of fall and spring. When you go outside, the effects of pollen and allergens can be overwhelming.

Pets may also be another form of allergen creating your allergy eyes. Dander and hair from both cats and dogs can be released into the environment. When you breathe in the two, they can irritate the eyes and cause allergy eyes.

There are some ways to keep your pet and still have clear eyes.

What can be done for Allergy Eyes?

One medication, Visine Advance Allergy combines both an antihistamine and a decongestant to effectively relieve the itching, tearing, and redness of your eyes. The symptoms that have been caused by your allergies: pollen, trees, grass, dust, pets, and mold can be relieved. By using Visine Advance Allergy you can soothe and comfort your once irritated eyes.

This product provides fast relief for itch, watery eyes while reducing the redness. It contains an antihistamine as well as a decongestant to reduce the swelling of blood vessels.

Adults and children 6 years and over can use these drops. To do so, place 1 to 2 drops in the affected eyes up to four times a day. You may experience a brief tingling sensation.

If you experience pain, changed vision, continued redness, or irritated eyes, or if your condition worsens consult a doctor. If this lasts more that 72 hours, consult a doctor then as well. Do not use this medication if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, or glaucoma. Using too much of this medicine may cause the redness to persist. Your itchy, red, irritated allergy eyes should become better after using a good product, such as Visine Advance Allergy, allergy medications, and a cleaner environment. Using these together will achieve the best results.

How is the FAQ organized?
The FAQ is organized into 12 sections. Please keep in mind that the section topics are not completely disjoint, so if you are having trouble finding something, be sure to check related sections too. General Photography: General photography issues. This is not meant to be a general photography FAQ, but many questions about digital photography have answers that are appropriate for general photography too.Low-resolution digital images can be transmitted instantly via e-mail to anywhere in the world. Large prints can be produced from high-resolution digital images. Graphics and labeling can easily be added to digital images. Digital proof images can be viewed by the client the same day as the flight.

Where can I find out all about digital photography?
There are a plethora of choices today! I personally have converted to this new medium, (thus I don’t have to pack bags of film or worry about airport X-ray issues!) I have the following points to offer you: If you are buying an SLR camera that will take your existing interchangeable lenses, expect to spend serious money. The Nikon D100 body alone can be found selling for about U.S. $ 1,000.00 (May 2006), and the excellent new Nikon D70 for $ 999.00.We still have film, but use that as back up. Our digital equipment will allow us to make up to 30 x 40 prints of the same quality that we would get when we shot with our medium format film camera’s.I began the switch to digital photography in late 1998 when I purchased the Kodak DC-260. After purchasing professional grade Nikon equipment in early 2004, I made the switch to digital photography.

Question: What do you think of digital photography?
Answer: For many years I was a dedicated film user and was reluctant to switch to digital. With a few Photoshop classes for nature photographers behind me I wish I had made the switch years earlier. Digital cameras and Photoshop are incredibly powerful tools and they will only get better.Part of what makes the FAQ interesting for me and useful for other is, I think, that it’s a living document. It’s constantly evolving and contains many links that people can follow to get more information. I’m afraid that it would lose some of this appeal in printed form.Digital cameras offer you a very important advantage over film.

What is diffraction and how does it affect my photos?
The corners of my images are darker than the center at the telephoto end of my zoom’s range. Is my lens defective? (vignetting)You can either shoot your own photos, borrow a friends digital camera, or if you live within 50 miles from Carlton, MN, we can come to your location and take digital photos for you. If you send us raw photos that need to be edited, scanned, enhanced, resized, etc., there may be a small fee for editing, depending upon what has to be done. Please see our contract for more detailed information.

What can I do to improve LCD visibility in bright sunlight?
Why this long lag or delay between when I press the shutter and when the camera takes the picture? (shutter lag)I’m Ron Parr. You can email me at “ronparr - at - (You’ll need to convert that to a proper email address.) Feel free to email corrections or suggestions.

Do you shoot film or digital photography?
I began the switch to digital photography in late 1998 when I purchased the Kodak DC-260. After purchasing professional grade Nikon equipment in early 2004, I made the switch to digital photography. Today, I shoot all digital for personal and client photography. I feel the benefits of digital outweight film in many ways. Many photographers would debate this statement, but for most of my client’s needs, digital photography produces outstanding results. Our new Digital Photography Resource Center can help yopu out.

Replacing Your Golf Club Grips

Just a very minor twisting of the grip will be magnified many times over in the inaccuracy of the shot result.

Whether it is a used set of golf clubs that you just picked up at a garage sale or a set that you purchased brand new and have been playing for years, re-gripping your golf clubs is a terrific idea. After all, your grip is the only direct contact that you physically have with your golf clubs. Just a very minor twisting of the grip will be magnified many times over in the inaccuracy of the shot result.

If you play many times a week you should re-grip your golf clubs more frequently than if you play twice a month. The re-gripping of your golf clubs must be done correctly or the problem could actually get worse.

Core Size

Proper re-gripping of your golf clubs requires you to know the core size of the grip that you require and the size of the grip that best fits your hand. Grips come in standard core sizes of; .520″, .560″, .580″, .600″, and .620″. To determine the core size, simply measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft that you are going to re-grip.

It is critical that the diameter of the shaft match the core diameter of the grip. The next step in the re-gripping process is to determine what size grip best fits your hands. Grips come in a variety of sizes; small, medium, large, and jumbo.

Grip Sizing Your Golf Clubs

To accurately determine what grip size fits your hands, measure from your wrist (base of hand) to the end of your longest finger. If the result is less than 6.5 inches you should use a small grip. Use a .560″ if the distance is 6.5 to 7.0 inches, .560″ if 7.0 to 7.5 inches, and .580″ if 7.5 to 8.0 inches. For anything over 8.0 inches, select a jumbo grip.

Materials Required to Re-Grip Your Golf Clubs

You will need grip solvent, two sided, two inch wide grip tape, a container to catch the unused solvent in, a vise and a special rubber shaft holder. Many of the golf club re-gripping experts use Coleman camp fuel because they claim no residue is left over and it does a great job. These same experts caution against using WD40 because it leaves an oily residue and as a result the grips could come loose.

Re-Gripping Steps

Put the shaft holder over your club shaft and tighten the vise. Cut a piece of tape 8.0 inches long. Place it along the butt of the shaft leaving a half-inch over the end of the shaft. Wrap the tape around the shaft and push it slightly into the shaft to seal the end of the club. Squeeze solvent along the tape, fill the grip about three quarters full of solvent, put your finger over the hole in the end of the grip and then squeeze the grip opening closed.

Now shake the grip so that solvent covers the entire inside and pour the solvent along the tape. Push the grip up and over the shaft butt then hold the grip by the front and back and push applying equal pressure with both hands. Clean up any excess solvent from the grip and let it set for an hour. Good Luck re-gripping your golf clubs!

Benefits of a Water System in Your Garden

Posted on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 8:31 am

by Kent Higgins

Nowadays, everyone is talking about lowering our footprint on the earth. Many are pointing out the limited resources we have, including fresh water. With droughts and uncertainty, a lot of gardeners are changing their lifestyles to match. What about your gardening techniques? Water is one of the most important resources for your garden and is becoming increasingly regulated by cities and counties nationally as it becomes scarce due to droughts.

Luckily, there are many techniques that can be used to lower the amount of water used in your garden without reducing the yields you expect or the beauty you want. Here are some of those techniques to help you reduce your water usage in your garden.

Use Mulch

If you haven’t already been mulching your plants, do so now. Mulch helps to limit the amount of water that evaporates from the soil and organic mulches like clippings or wood chips ad organic matter and nutrients to the soil, giving an extra bonus to your plants. Plastic mulches can limit evaporation, but are not usually tillable, so consider the options besides the price tag. All mulches limit infiltration soil loss from erosion as well, so mulching is a great boon to the gardener.

Distribute Water Wisely

Most gardeners know that sprinklers and sprayers are not very efficient at distributing water the garden, though they enjoy widespread use. They are easy and cover large areas, though. Sprayed water, however, lands mostly on foliage (which does no good) while much of it evaporates into the air before ever even hitting the ground. Soaking techniques and tools, like soaker hoses, flood irrigation, drip systems, and similar methods, are much more efficient at distributing water in quantity. You’ll find that your overall water usage can be cut by 25% or more if you use these methods rather than sprinklers.

Water That Which Needs It Most

Focus your watering on plants that need it the most, such as newly-planted or transplanted seeds and plants. Plants with limited root systems or high humidity requirements should also get attention first. Most well-established plants (especially natives) will be able to withstand a drought. They still need water, of course, but you may be able to cut back on how much without seriously affecting their yield or beauty.

Water At The Right Time

Watering in the early morning or late evening cuts out much of the loss from evaporation as the heat of the day is not there to facilitate it. Early morning is best, as the night coolness still clings to the air. Morning watering also helps keep plants cool throughout the day.

Supplement Your Water

Collecting water from downspouts during rains is a great way to supplement the water you’re using in the garden. Plus it’s free! If you use chemical-free water to clean buckets, garden pots, wash your car , wash your dishes, etc., you can save the runoff to give it to your garden. When washing the car, position it so that most of the runoff water will go into your garden or onto your lawn. This way you do not have to buy a self watering planter for your garden.

These are a few ways you can deal with drought and help save precious freshwater sources while still tending and caring for your garden. Happy gardening!

Sweet Tooth Bianca Loses Weight with Food Portions

Posted on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 8:23 am

by Rowena French

My friend Bianca and her parents moved to live near us after leaving Italy nearly twenty years ago. We are the ’sisters’ that our parents failed to provide and we have always shared our ups and downs. Recently, Bianca has been the happiest I can remember as an adult when she solved her long term ‘weight worry’ by learning about portion control - how to manage the intake of her food portions on a daily basis.

Obesity had not been a problem for any of Bianca’s family including her parents and they were at a loss to comprehend how her weight had soared after she moved interstate. The cause was an experience unfamiliar to both Bianca’s mother and father. She continued to enjoy cheese and pasta and drink wine but she increased the size of her food portions and this caused her to pile on extra pounds.

Bianca lost a few pounds when she married Joe but in her busy life as a wife, worker and mother she has never been able to successfully manage her body weight with any given diet. She has tried every approach and even every fad diet, cutting out each major food group at some stage. She always concentrated on the type of food she ate (or did not eat), rather than on whether she was eating the right amount of these food portions.

Bianca’s decision about how to regain control of her weight came as she was preparing dinner one evening. She was done with diets that saw her shopping and preparing different food. She decided that the food she prepared for her family was nutritious and that she would eat it as they did, but in smaller portions.

But what food portions should she eat? Bianca knew that a balanced diet provides us with the nutrients essential for a healthy body. She knew that health authorities like the American Diabetes Association, The American Heart Association and the American Medical Association all agree that the best approach to weight loss is a balanced diet and she knew she provided food from the four major food groups for her family.

And what of the size food portions on her menu? The answer was surprisingly simple for Bianca because she decided that her Italian dinner plates decorated with flowers on the lip and a blue circle inside this would determine the size of her food portions for lunch and dinner. Unwittingly, the blue circle became the boundary for her portion control.

Joe and the boys had their regular meals at dinner and Bianca joined them but only ate the food portions she could fit inside the blue circle. She ate a healthy breakfast and she kept a stash of almonds, carrots and fruit for her mid morning and afternoon snacks but limited the size of these too.

This new approach to eating worked and Bianca has lost weight regularly for the past year until she recently reached a body shape and weight that she feels is really her. Life in her European family home always revolved around food eaten the right way and Bianca has re-established this in her own family. Food portions are smaller, the taste of food is enjoyed, meals have become a celebration and there is even time for a sweet splurge now and then!

Bianca is amazed at how this way of losing weight was so painless and successful and she is sure that she will have a much healthier life than if she had remained obese. She says that eating smart through portion control has helped her regain her healthy body weight and that this even allows room for some tiramisu as a special treat. Controlling food portions in her life has given Bianca far more choice in her life and she loves it!

One fine day when I was at a local store I was impressed by the hair coloring of the clerk seated there. I told her how beautiful the coloring looked on her with that perfect dark base and the streaks that looked so natural. It seemed as if the sun itself had beautifully dyed her hair. We got talking about how when we were young we did not have to take the help of any hair dye. We had to spray SunIn on the hair and exposed it to sunlight for an hour or so and we had the desired hair color. This led to discussing how that was almost impossible now what with the ozone layer weakening and the ultraviolet rays having the potential to cause irreparable damage to our hair. (SunIn by the way is not one of the aerosols but is a pump spray).

However we are not here to discuss hair coloring methods that do not contain chemicals. We are here to provide you with information regarding the many types of skin cancer. However as we are no skin experts the information that we make available to you here would be basic and informative.

There are three types of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma (a.k.a. non-melanoma skin cancer); Squamous Cell Carcinoma; and Melanoma.

Melanoma (also, Cutaneous Melanoma, Malignant Melanoma) - Cancer cells are growing in the melanocytes, the cells that are responsible for skin pigmentation. According to University of Maryland medicine and other experts, of all of the types of skin cancer, Melanoma is “the rarest and the most virulent.” It is typically found in people with fair skin, light hair, and/or light eyes, though it is possible in others with different complexions, and as the experts above also assert, does not exempt those with dark brown or black skin. Identifiable symptoms include, most commonly, a mole changing color, size, shape, or state (starts oozing or bleeding), or a mole that UMM notes “feels itchy, hard, lumpy, swollen, or tender to the touch.”

Squamous Cell Carcinoma- This type of skin cancer is also known as non-melanoma skin cancer. This manifests itself as red colored scaly patches or nodules. This mainly affects the Caucasians as they have a light complexion. The symptoms are mostly seen on ear-rims, lips, mouth and face.

Basal Cell Carcinoma - The second of the types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Cancer, typically starts as a “small, fleshy bump or nodule,” most commonly found on the head, neck, and/or hands. Of the three types of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, which is typically found in Caucasians, say those at UMM, make up “more than 90 percent in the U.S..

My mother had Basal Cell Carcinoma on her lip, and while we thought it to be Herpes, she knew it was “sun blister” and immediately went to the doctor to know about it. This is good news if you are one of those that talks about the loss of the days of being in the sun, of sunbathing, swimming and frolicking outdoors in the warm sunshine.
