Do You Know The History Of Coffee

Posted on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 8:21 am

by Karl

The true history of coffee is very hard to verify.

It is often said that the effects of coffee was first experienced by a sheephearder that was tending his sheep.

His sheep started to become very active after eating a mysterious berry from a plant.

The sheephearder tried the berry himself and had the same results.

It has been said that a monk told him to be careful as this berry was the fruit of the devil.

However, it is also rumored that the monks used the fruit to stay awake and pray.

Another story is that an Arabian man was given a sentence of banishment to the desert.

He decided to try eating and boiling a mysterious plant.

He was fortunate enought to survive by eating the unknown plant.

Residents of a town near the desert believed that the mans survival was a message from the gods.

The plant became known as Mocha, named after the desert town.

It is said that the coffee plant was originally found only in Ethiopia.

They wrapped it in animal fat to eat while on raids.

Coffee migrated to Arabia, and the Arabians began to market coffee in the middle east.

It was the Turkish people that were the first to drink coffee.

They added spices such as clove and cinnamon to create a sweeter taste.

Venetian trade merchants were responsible for coffee finding its way to Europe.

Soon after, coffee became a popular drink and coffee houses began to be built.

Today, millions of people enjoy their coffee throughout the day.

With all of the flavors and blends of coffee to enjoy, I suggest you try a cup today!.

The Most Popular Beverage In The World

Posted on Monday, November 24, 2008 at 1:41 pm

Coffee! This popular beverage is available in numerous flavors and fashions. Coffee is made by saturating ground-up dried beans in piping hot water. In spite of the Herculean efforts by countless companies for many drinks of diverse temperatures, hot coffee remains the number one choice of most drinkers for all main meal times during the day, and while driving in their vehicle. This hot beverage appears to be the most popular beverage in the world. Some folks take some amazing steps to make certain that their beverage is just right. Given the excitement over iced coffee, the majority of coffee lovers demand hot coffee. Surprisingly there are a few menus where chilled mugs with iced coffee has made a restaurant showing.

However, the overall population of coffee lovers drinks it at 160-degrees. There are numerous coffee products on the market, which enable you to coax the best flavor out of coffee grounds. People try everything to get perfect hot coffee, from buying home roasters and graters to complex systems.

Many enthusiasts insist that the degree temperature of the coffee must just reach boiling point is at 212 degrees F. At this point, the water will soak the grounds over a specified time. This will bring the coffee to optimal flavor. For some others, the actual creation of the coffee matters more than the actual imbibing of the beverage. A few of these aficionados prefer to change the flavor of the coffee with whitener and sweetener. To them how the coffee tastes from the pot is irrelevant.

There are companies out there inventing an auto-stirring unit for your hot beverage. This will help those of you who especially require the addition of extra condiments such as cream or sugar. If you Google the words ‘coffee cup stir’ on the Internet you’ll find many units being described and offered for sale, some from big name manufacturers.

Danger Lurks In a Cup of Hot Beverage
Some people have discovered difficult lessons regarding the dangers of steaming coffee. It is true that the liquid is likely not boiling as they try to drink it, yet the temperature may be hot enough to hurt your lips or skin. Don’t try to swallow the hot coffee, because it’s still very hot.

Numerous folks certainly appreciate the taste of a hot coffee but will (for some reason) drop in an ice cube to bring the temperature down to palatable feel taking a drink. Countless others favor letting their hot beverage cool physically as they gently sip.

Reducing the hotness of the coffee in the cup is the most certain way to be able to gently drink the hot beverage. This can be done by letting it sit. Cups or mugs with wider mouths chill the coffee faster due to a great exposed to air. Mugs with narrower mouths take longer to chill the coffee for the opposite reason.

If Coffee Good for You?

by Marc Warren

For millions of people coffee is a part of their daily life. Therefore, it stands to reason that we must consider its affects on a person’s health. In times past it has been thought to be bad for you. That opinion is now changing and in fact some health benefits have been discovered.

Caffeine, one of the main ingredients in coffee, has long been known to be a mild stimulant. That can raise blood pressure, increase heart rate and produce the occasional irregular beat. But most researchers now believe the effect is mild and short-lived.

Continued research has discovered that not only is moderate coffee consumption not a health risk, there are some benefits.

There’s strong evidence that coffee reduces the odds of developing colon cancer, but only at higher levels of consumption - four cups a day or more. That much intake may well outweigh the benefits.

But other benefits accrue even at moderate levels of coffee drinking.

Coffee, like wine, contains antioxidants that help prevent heart disease and certain cancers by removing cell-destroying oxygen radicals from the blood. Some studies say the concentration of antioxidants is greater than that found in cranberries, apples or tomatoes. Scientists, however, point to the many other valuable vitamins, minerals and fibers in fruits and vegetables.

Apart from the obvious contribution to mental alertness, Chinese studies strongly suggest that coffee can even help reduce the effects of Parkinson’s disease.

American and Scandinavian studies both suggest that decaf and regular coffee help reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes. Good news for the Scandinavians who have the highest per capita consumption in the world.

The caffeine in coffee also assists the digestive process by producing more acid in the stomach. This results in a decreased possibility of gall and kidney stones and makes for better digestion overall.

Caffeine has been shown to reduce constriction of airways in asthma sufferers, with moderate consumption. In addition to the caffeine, coffee contains theophylline, a bronchodilator which helps the effect.

However, as with anything with the positive affects come the negatives.

If your goal is to start increase the size of your family you might want to be careful how much coffee you consume. Large consumption of coffee can cause you to be less fertile.

Large amounts of coffee produce homocysteine in your blood which can cause heart disease. Also research suggests that coffee can lead to high LDL cholesterol. Two other possible negatives when considering how much coffee you will consume.

Seafood Recipes Can Be Fun, Easy And, Yes, Healthy

by Shannon Linnen

Seafood recipes can be fun and healthy and let’s not forget to mention EASY! Using your favorite seafood, such as shrimp, mussels scallops or crab and a few of the ideas given in this article you can continue to create unique and healthy seafood recipes time and time again.

Picking out a seafood recipe is an easy thing to do, with the help of the search engines you can find almost any kind of recipe that you like. Just using the phrase “Seafood Recipe” will return a mountain of sites that will take hours to browse through. Of course if your just looking for one really good recipe, you could easily find that in five minutes or less.

Traditional recipes for clambakes are excellent, as are many lobster recipes. However, clambakes can take most of a day to set up, and lobster is extremely expensive for a family meal. I am a working mother who cannot afford to spend hours cooking a meal. I need to make sure my family has dinner at a reasonable time, but at the same time they expect the meal to be worth waiting for.

Measuring is one thing I am terrible at. I like to use a few favorite ingredients in any seafood recipes and adapt it to a healthier tastier way of cooking. And, the best part of cooking seafood is you can use whatever means you have available, whether it be grilling, broiling or sauting.

Let’s take shrimp for example… a pound of 26 - 35 count shrimp on sale should cost you about $8.00 and what a treat your whole family will love! Peel and de-vein your shrimp using a small paring knife fed through the back of the shrimp from the top to the tail (knife facing away from shrimp body and cutting through the shell) making it easy to open up the shell so your shrimp will pop right out! (Hey, save even more time, by purchasing the already frozen, peeled and de-veined version.)

Use about a teaspoon of butter and a teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil in the bottom of a saut pan, add a clove or garlic (let’s be honest - we are not peeling and mincing our own garlic here, we are using a teaspoon of already chopped garlic in the jar), a half of finely chopped sweet onion, some salt and pepper, some parsley and your favorite seafood seasoning. You can just as easily wrap all of your ingredients in foil and pop on the grill or under the broiler for about 20 minutes for no-fuss cooking.

Serve your shrimp over a bed of wild rice (that you cooked in chicken broth) along with a side of asparagus and baby portabella mushrooms (cooked together with a bit of extra virgin olive oil and salt on the stovetop or wrapped in foil on the grill) and you end up with a succulent feast that is not only tasty but healthy, too in 30 - 45 minutes… now if I could only get my husband to do the dishes I’d have it made.

After awhile, cooking with fresh seafood items will become a standard way of cooking for you. The best part of utilizing seafood in your normal diet is it just so healthy! It is important to note that making sure your seafood is fresh is absolutely necessary. To ensure this, choose a company located on the eastern seaboard to handle the shipping of your seafood items. If at some point you run out of things to cook, no problem, just go online and view all the great seafood recipes out there. Of course you always have the option of visiting a bookstore in your town or city and they almost always have a large collection of cookbooks available.

When you are planning a family get together, definitely consider using a seafood recipe to make the occasion memorable. Most people when presented with a fresh seafood meal think that this is a special treat or a rare occasion.
