Posted on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at 3:16 am

by Jared Hillman

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a problem that arises as a result of lower levels of this vitamin, this problem is not so common in America – it is more linked to malnutrition. But it can also be caused by a bad absorption by the body. It is important that we learn to prevent and treat this problem specially if we are changing our lifestyle and eating habits.

For mild cases of B12 deficiency, it is always recommended the use of over the counter vitamin supplements. These supplements are easily found in drugstores and come mostly in the form of pills.

In severe cases however and in cases where there is malabsorption, the vitamin B12 treatment will include more serious measures like the use of intramuscular injections of B12 that must be applied for life and the inclusion of prescribed drugs such as prednisone.

Diet plays an important role in restoring the levels of vitamin B12 and is an integral part of any vitamin B12 deficiency treatment. The people who are at high risk of developing this condition include vegan people, pregnant/lactating women and infants.

This vitamin is mainly found on animal protein food such as poultry, meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. Vegan people have problems with this vitamin because it is not easily found in vegetables.

Pregnant/lactating women and infants have increased nutritional needs. It’s in these cases that supplementation becomes very important as a way to prevent problems later on. Thankfully, our bodies don’t need big quantities of B12.

If the patient has a problem absorbing the vitamin B12, diet is also very important. A person can’t depend only in supplements if they have this problem. The same goes for patients who have deficiencies caused by an advanced age.

These are the most common treatments for vitamin B12 deficiency, keep in mind though that this article serves as a source of information. To get a proper diagnose you need to visit a doctor who will vary the treatment and doses of vitamin B12 according to your specific case.

I am referring to beds and mattresses that contain visco foam. visco foam mattresses are known to give people the best nights sleep imaginable.

NASA developed Visco foam to decrease the extreme amounts of pressure caused by G. forces during take off and space shuttles. After developing Visco foam NASA decided not to use it. The result has landed Visco foam being used in the medical field and by mattress companies all over the world.

Mattress manufacturers jump all over viso foam because of its ability to elevate pressure points while sleeping. The main problem when mattress company started using viscoelastic foam, was its extremely high price. The general public could not readily afford to pay for mattresses that use viscoelastic foam. However in recent years it has become less expensive to produce and now is widely available in almost everyone’s price range.

The most common use of visco foam is in mattresses and pillows, and mattress topper’s. It’s the retaining abilities make it able to help some pain sufferers to reduce the feelings of pain they feel because of the added warmth while sleeping. A visco foam mattress tends to be denser than an ordinary foam mattress making it more supportive, but a lot heavier.

With this in mind, they mattress containing Visco foam will usually sell for more money than a traditional mattress, however they disco foam mattress will last longer due to their ability to resist dust mites. Visco foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that help to increase its density and viscosity level. Due to the chemicals used to make visco foam, new visco foam mattresses give off a distinct chemical odor but will decrease over time.

Beauty Tips for Younger Looking Skin

Some people are more fortunate than others when it comes to how good their skin looks but good skin care is not a secret art. Part of the problem with many women is the need for immediate results, always expecting the cosmetic surgeon to save the day using invasive procedures that often end in failure. Of course the greatest benefit of today’s beauty care products is they only cost a fraction of traditional cosmetic surgery but can really provide a much more natural look.

The days of cold creams and the like are over with modern formulations light years ahead of what they once were. The skin that covers our entire body has an important role to play in continuing our health and beauty so should not be overlooked when it comes to regular maintenance.

The first step in skin care is making sure your skin is clean as pollution like dust, bacteria and make-up all take their toll, so the skin must be clean. To do this requires a gentle cleanser which must be used with cotton wool pads moving the wetted pads in a circular motion around the face until all areas have been done then once you have washed with warm water, use a soft towel to dab your skin until it is dry.

To ensure your PH balance is not disrupted, you will need to use a tone after the cleanser has been applied. While the tone replaces the PH balance, moisturizing afterwards ensures the skin stays supple and can help reduce the signs of aging that come in the form of small wrinkles and lines. Moisturizing also has the added bonus of locking in the moisture that can be lost without its use, so do not skimp on this beauty care product.

Once or twice weekly you should treat your skin with an exfoliant or natural peel to remove dead skin cells and to deep cleanse your skin as part of you skin care routine. It is important to remove all traces of the peel or exfoliant so you will need to cleanse the skin and then tone and moisturize as normal. These tips are also useful preparation for getting the best spray tan.

Beauty care product eye creams can now be used to help the very delicate skin around this area by reducing and swelling and signs of aging like lines but improving the elasticity of the skin in this region. Taking some form of daily exercise and drinking plenty of water are two things you don’t need to spend a fortune on but will really improve the skin tone and feel. It is not a good idea to forget the important role our skin plays in our overall health and of course how we look so taking care of it is not just about vanity.

Increase Safety In Your Home – Install A Stair Lift

Posted on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 3:28 am

by Brinkmann Hamer

Modern invention has brought many useful things into existences which in turn have greatly increased our safety, and provide maximum protection as well. Previously which seemed to be tedious and difficult task, now seems like a child’s play. Stair lift is one such modern invention which has brought many benefits and safety features to the household stairs.

Stairs can be very unsafe and difficult; hundreds of thousands of people fall from stairs every year. Generally young people may survive the fall; on the other hand, old people and the physically disabled people can get hurt badly in a fall, even to the degree of beyond recovery. Some people even lose their lives due to falling from stairs.

Stair lifts can bring a hazard free environment in your home. A lot of people cannot afford to get a single story house vast enough to fulfil their needs as the cost of land is reaching the skies these days. As a result most people have to resort back to multi story houses which include danger and risk of climbing up and down the stair case.

Accidents happen, and they might be inevitable, but the probability of an accident can be reduced by installing stair lifts which allow the elderly and the disabled to use the stairs as much as they like without endangering their lives. How many times one had to watch out for the elderly or the disabled members of the family just to make sure they don’t hurt themselves while climbing up or down the stairs. Stair lifts can change the scenario, and guarantee peace of mind as well.

Stair lifts also provide independence to these people as they mostly have to rely on others to help them move about the stairs. The sense of dependence in case of climbing up and down the stairs bothers people who really don’t feel like being a burden on others. Stair lifts, surely is a wonderful solution for such people as it returns them the freedom and independence they always wished.

Stairs lifts can be installed in the tightest spots. They can be installed on indoor or outdoor stair cases without any problem at all. Narrow stair cases are a major problem for most people as they restrict their freedom, and also make it difficult for others to help them move about the stairs. Stair lifts can even fit in these narrow stair cases with ease, and thus provide an easy solution to this daily problem.

A lot of people are also unable to stand at all, and therefore have to move their wheel chairs up and down the stairs with the assistance of someone. It can be a genuine problem, as it is absolutely a hard task to move a person on a wheel chair all the way up the stairs. Nevertheless, with the assistance of a stair lift, some wheel chairs can fit onto the stair lift, and therefore the person is transported up the stairs along with the wheelchair with no problem or effort.

Stair lifts are found in various sizes and shapes to suit the desires of nearly all customers. A majority of organizations specialize in manufacturing and installing stair lifts, and hence know the proper way to address any staircase what so ever. They would most likely send a sales representative or an engineer who will make an evaluation of what sort of stair lift should be used, and then will suggest the ideal solution for you.

Easy Yoga Breathing Techniques

Posted on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 3:39 am

by Kim Archer

Yoga is a 6000-year-old form of exercise which not only disciplines the body but conditions the mind as well.

While the various exercises, called asanas, are the basic building blocks of yoga training, breath is its very essence. Some go so far as to say, “If you can breathe, you can do yoga.” One of the main goals of yoga is to teach you to still and quiet your mind through the use of your breath.

By regularly taking the time for yoga, you will become very conscious of your breathing. You will train yourself to control your breath, which will help you become calm and relaxed. As well, the form of your asanas will improve the more you focus on your breathing.

As human beings, our minds tend to wander into thoughts of the past and the future. However, our bodies exist only in the present. By practicing yoga, you will learn through your breath how to draw your mind back to your body and abandon all of your worries.

One of the refreshing aspects about yoga is that, even if only for a minute, you are able to focus and concentrate on the present, and you are learning to let go of the cares and concerns that can bring tension and disease to your body.

Yoga teaches the practice of conscious breathing while doing poses – this fosters consciousness of your technique and greater mental alertness. By drawing your mind into the moment and forgetting all else, you will garner the benefits which yoga has to offer.

Yoga has many breathing exercises which combat tension and bring a balanced mental state – to begin with, try this exercise.

* Lie or sit still in a comfortable position and be aware of your breathing.

* Still aware of your breath, inhale and exhale 4 counts each several times.

* Next, make your inhalations and exhalations last for five counts each.

* Then increase the count to 6 for each inhalation and exhalation. Become aware of your body – make sure that it is relaxed.

* Continue this way until your inhalations and exhalations reach 9 counts. If this is causing you any discomfort, drop the count back down to more comfortable number for you.

* Keep bringing your mind back to your body to check to see if there is any tension anywhere in your body. If so, attempt to relax that part of your body.

* Whatever number of counts you reach, continue breathing with these long breaths for several rounds, then stop counting and breathe normally for 10 rounds.

What you should discover from this exercise, as well as with many of yogas other breathing exercises, is the ability to relax your thoughts and to still your mind so that you are present in your body. In time, you will eventually gain mastery over your breath so that you will be able to call on your breath to still your mind in times of stress and tension.

A word about Alternative Energy

Posted on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 3:28 am

by Jenny Robinson

There are many different forms in which alternative energy is available. Solar power is always the obvious choice using photovoltaic cells and whereas these were at one time too costly to consider, that is no longer the case. There aren’t any areas where solar power cannot be utilised including: generating electricity and hot water plus of course it has the added benefit of being pollution free. Nevertheless, for us to be able to inexpensively make use of the sun’s energy, we need to subject ourselves to more work than ever. For the time being, the resource is a little too conditional as storage batteries are needed to be used as backups in the evenings and on inclement days.

As of the moment, the most-invested-in alternative energy source favored by many private investors as well as the government is the wind energy. The process in which “wind farms” are developed by placing great arrays of triple-bladed windmills all over the place to capture the motion of the wind thus using its kinetic energy for mechanical or electrical energy conversion is just one of the many effective methods to greatly utilize wind energy.

Making use of energy and having a windmill to carry out the process is not something that can surprise many. Replacing the classic method is the more advanced variation in the form of modern wind turbines. The only downside to this form of power is when the wind isn’t blowing, you cannot produce power. It is during these moments that the electric company is completely taking charge of powering your home or office since wind energy cannot fully function independently.

Another more reliable source of alternative energy is the use of hydroelectric power plants and these (usually very large) plants can produce huge amounts of power. The downhill motion of water implying its flow in response to gravity is used to turn turbines and as a result, generate electrical energy and this is the process in which hydroelectric energy works. Fortunately water is all around us in vast quantities so creating these plants has never been a problem generally. Even though the exploitation of hydroelectricity as a source of alternative energy can be beneficial and has a lot of sources, producing it may still hold back its implementation due to some complex and high-priced procedures.

Fortunately water is all around us in vast quantities so creating these plants has never been a problem generally. The main problem with this process is the initial financial cost and the size of these dams means it is a lengthy project which does not come without it’s own issues.Building of dams is often the most common and effective means of controlling the flow of water to sufficiently provide the source in generating the needed power. These projects require years of planning and work but there are impacts on the environment which conservationists have serious concerns about. To produce power this way does not always require a dam, especially if it is only a small community that is being serviced. There are small run-of-river hydroelectric converters which are good for supplying neighbourhoods or an individual office or home.

Geothermal energy which is simply the naturally-occurring energy is also in all probability the most underestimated and less appreciated form of alternative energy that can be generated when artesian waters just below the earth’s crust are heated. The earth’s inner molten core is the one responsible for transferring the heat into the water. A number of different methods are used to harness this ‘free’ power which is drawn up into power plants. The purpose of drawing up the hot water is for the gathering of the steam. It is in the USA where this technology has become world famous with ‘the Geysers’ dry steam power plant not that far from San Francisco.

Alternative Medicine, What Is It

Posted on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at 3:19 am

by Dave Owen

Do the following terms confuse you: “alternative medicine”, “complementary medicine”, and “integrative medicine”? Would it help to know what the difference is between these three terms? Here is a simplified definition and illustration of each of these terms for your benefit.

For you to understand alternate medicine, complementary medicine and integrated medicine, one should first understand what comprises alternative medicine and conventional medicine. Medical doctors or doctors of osteopathy and other allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, RNs, and psychologists all practice conventional medicine. You may have heard or read other terms for conventional medicine including “Western medicine”, “mainstream medicine”, “orthodox medicine”, “regular medicine” or “allopathic medicine”.

Alternative medicine applies to what is used by those who are completely replacing conventional ways of dealing with symptoms and illness. They use the practices and procedures associated with healing through natural therapies and methods that may not have anything to do with conventional medicine ways. These “normal” ways include practices such as pharmaceutical drugs, and surgery. Conventional medicine normally tends to treat illnesses by the symptoms presented. In room #5 is a broken arm, in room #8 is a nosebleed, in room #2 is preterm labor. Each patient is defined by the presenting symptoms and the treatment is symptom-oriented. Then drugs are prescribed to get rid of or mask the symptom normally without addressing the cause of the symptom. But, alternative medicine focuses on the whole person, not the presenting symptom.

Alternative medicine is founded on a 5000+ year history and is strongly rooted in ancient Chinese medicine and Indian (Ayuryedic medicine), along with other cultures. There exists a common feeling, regardless of which culture we examine, that says the energy of the body is required to be in harmony with the mind and spirit to facilitate healing.

For alternative medicine healing to take place, a practitioner or doctor merely identifies and then takes away obstacles that would prevent healing from taking place. Over the course of the healing the individual is instructed on lifestyle changes, self-care and preventative measures that can be taken to facilitate healing of his/her body, mind and spirit.

By using the art of healing using alternative medicine the body may be massaged, manipulated or relaxed and brought into harmony with the mind and spirit. Massage therapy, chiropractic care and reflexology are all methods and therapies that embody the beliefs revolving around the body healing itself.

Another area of alternative medicine is energy medicine. This calls for energy fields that are used to help the body parts heal that have gotten out of harmony. Examples of energy medicine are Tai Chi, Raiki, and therapeutic touch.

Complementary medicine, on the other hand, is applying the patterns of alternative medicine in harmony with conventional medicine. This way, the patient experiences the benefit of the healing powers of a particular practice of alternative medicine such as aromatherapy or acupuncture along with a procedure that is conventional medicine such as surgery.

A “complete approach to patient care” is integrative medicine. Those that practice it are focused on the whole patient including the body, mind and spirit of the individual presenting with an illness.
