Dog Baths - How Much is Too Much

Posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 5:11 am

by Donna Boras

If you keep your dog well groomed, which means frequent brushing and keeping his sleeping area clean, you will not have to be bathing a dog more than every month at the most. Some breeds have more dog odor than others. If your dog is being groomed regularly and he begins to smell, it is time for a bath.

Specifically formulated shampoos for dogs are safe and have the correct PH balance. The type of shampoo you use will depend on your best friend’s skin problems, age, etc. (see guidelines below) How often you wash your pet will depend on what he has been up to or into. But do keep in mind that more than once a month can dry the skin and coat.

Here are some guidelines for dog baths…

1. If your best buddy has gotten into something smelly, it is time for a bath. You can use a deodorizing or antibacterial shampoo for this job.

2. Normal dog odor - there are many shampoos that will be suitable for this job but one of the tearless ones is best.

**Note**If the odor from your dog is more that just ordinary dog smell, check with your veterinarian. It could be caused from infection of the ear, mouth or anal glands. Skin disease can also cause odor.

3. Dandruff - check with your vet or groomer to determine the cause and use the appropriate shampoo.

4. Allergies - a dog with itchy skin from allergies may find a bath soothing and help reduce itching. The use of a soothing oatmeal shampoo, a gentle hypo-allergenic or hydrocortisone-based shampoo in most cases should be helpful.

5. Fleas, tics, mites, or lice - shampooing is one of the best ways to get rid of external parasites and there are many appropriate shampoos that will fight fleas and ticks on your canine friend that have proper pH balance while cleaning and conditioning your dog’s coat.

6. If your best buddy has had a confrontation with a skunk, there are special shampoos for this type of odor.

7. Swimming in salt water - salt will cause itching and skin irritation.

A few other tips to remember about bathing . . .

1. If you are bathing a puppy use a shampoo that is specially formulated for puppies.

2. The younger you introduce your pet dog to bathing and brushing the easier it will be.

3. Shampoo can leave a residue which may irritate your dog’s skin. Rinse well after shampooing.

4. Human shampoos should not be used on dogs. The PH level is not the same.

5. Fatty acid supplements added to your dog’s good diet will help maintain a healthy coat and skin.

6. Dry shampoos are available if you have a doggy that does not like the water and does not find bath time fun. Keep in mind though, it does not really take the place of a bath because it does not reach the skin. You are going to have to shampoo your doggie at some point.

7. Select the correct shampoo for your dog. There are many to choose from.

8. I suggest clothes that you do not mind getting wet.

9. Be careful not to let fur go down your drain use a simple drain screen to protect your plumbing from hair clogs.

In summary, your dog’s appearance says a lot about you and how you feel about your best friend. There is no such thing as a breed that does not require grooming.

German Shepherd Breeders: Where To Find Them

Posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 4:47 am

by Jan Ryan

The German Shepherd dog has a relatively short history though it is a well-loved and well-worked dog today. The breed began in Germany in 1899 and was registered with the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1911. By World War I, over 48,000 German Shepherds were enlisted in the German army. Though the breed is part of the herding group, the German Shepherd dog has many other talents and can be trained in a variety of fields.

The German Shepherd breed is registered in the herding group by the American Kennel Club because of its skill in sheep herding. However, German Shepherd dogs are used for many other purposes today. They are the most common dogs used by police and military for protection and tracking and by the visually impaired as guides. German shepherds are highly intelligent, fiercely loyal, and are at their best when put to work. They can be trained to do multiple tasks. Of course, German Shepherds are also excellent family dogs especially for protection and home security. A German Shepherd breeder may specialize in training this breed in any of the above areas.

There are a few precautions any potential German Shepherd buyer should take before making a purchase of a purebred German Shepherd dog. First, know what you are looking for. Second, know what purpose you plan to utilize the German Shepherd for. Third, know what it takes to care for a German Shepherd. Fourth, know where to find a reputable breeder.

It is also important to know how to care for your German Shepherd. These dogs are happiest when working so it is essential that they be given tasks to do. Shepherds also require daily grooming and exercise. Hopefully, you have a purpose for buying this breed since German Shepherds need to work to be happy and they are intelligent enough to be trained in many areas, even only for home protection.

Make sure you know how to properly care for your German Shepherd and ask advice from the breeder on diet, exercise, and general training. A reputable breeder should have his or her own kennel and your German Shepherd should have received daily socialization, exercise and grooming as well as good nutrition and exposure to other animals. Lastly, make sure you have a purpose for buying a German Shepherd. This intelligent, hard-working breed is happiest when its owner gives it daily tasks to complete.

An alternative to buying a purebred puppy from a German Shepherd breeder is buying from a rescue center. Rescue centers save purebred dogs from abuse and abandonment. The centers socialize rescues and foster or adopt dogs out to appropriate, loving owners. Rescue centers are often either run by or affiliated with reputable breeders. A sure-fire way to tell a good breeder from bad is to see how involved they are with their dogs. Good German Shepherd breeders love German Shepherds!

Unfortunately, some breeders over-breed Shepherds in what are called puppy mills. These mills churn out puppies with little regard for the health, happiness or socialization of the adult dogs. Due to this practice, many adult German Shepherds are in need of homes. Rescue centers foster and adopt out dogs by matching them with loving owners. This is an excellent way to obtain a trained, purebred German Shepherd at a reduced cost.

It also gives the Shepherd a second chance at a good life. Consider a rescued German Shepherd when making your purchase. Rescue center staff can also refer you to reputable breeders if they do not have kennels for this purpose.

Discover Which Dog Foods Might Just Be Poisoning Your Dog

by Linda McNaughton

With the commercial pet food industry being under the gun in recent times, it can be hard for any of us to believe that we will not be seeing more pet food recalls in the near future. The sad truth is that the dog food we buy in the stores has the potential to cause extreme illness to our dogs.

These recalls weren’t just small isolated cases - some of them were widespread and affected thousands of households.

With all these recalls it is going to be difficult for the dog food industry to ever regain the trust of thousands of dog owners. Many people lost their pets because of tainted food that made it into their house.

Unfortunately, even if the dog food isn’t “tainted”, it is still not a healthy choice for your dog. There are so many horrible ingredients in commercial dog food that can have long term affects on your dog’s health.

The trend recently has been for us humans to eat better. The more nutritious the food is that we consume means we live healthier lives. Paying attention to diet and avoiding foods that have excessive fats and processed sugars, especially in the processed foods we buy, helps us to maintain bodies that are fit and trim.

However we often don’t think twice about what we are feeding our dogs when we pick up a bag of food for them. However, the same theory applies to any animal - what you feed them has a direct impact on their health and quality of life.

Some of the ingredients in commercial dog food have no place in a dog’s system. They are unreliable and extremely unhealthy.

Let’s take corn gluten meal as the first example. This ingredient is found in most commercial dog foods simply because it is such an inexpensive filler that the manufacturers can use. However, it is also one of the main causes of allergies in dogs. This one simple ingredient has the potential to make your dog miserable.

Chicken by-product meal is also used in the dog food industry. This is made up of parts of the chickens feet, necks, intestines, etc. They use this as a source of protein as well, yet this it is of such low grade that it does nothing for your dog. It also has the potential to be toxic or tainted.

Many dog foods include soybean meal in order to provide a source of protein. The ingredient itself isn’t unhealthy, however soybean is the number one cause of allergies in dogs. It just doesn’t make sense to include this considering how many dogs are allergic to it.

There are other ingredients to consider, but I think you have gotten the gist of why some of the major brands of dog food that are on the supermarket shelves should be avoided.

When you do your research about feeding your dog the right foods, you will be amazed at the changes you see. Your dogs mood, energy levels, skin, bathroom habits and even their behavior will improve. It’s amazing what a change in diet will do.

Does this mean that you can’t ever use store-bought dog food? Of course not, but you absolutely must know what to look for. We included a link at the bottom of this article where you can find more information.

There are resources available to begin feeding your dog with food that is not only tasty, but also nutritious to their dietary needs. You want your dog to live a long, happy and healthy life - do what you can to help them out by feeding them the right diet.

Dog Aggression Training

Posted on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 9:31 am

by Andy Austim

Aggression in a dog is something, which an owner should not tolerate and should be dealt with as soon as the problem arises. However, in order for an owner to find the right kind of dog aggression training they should be using to control this problem they need to understand the kinds of aggression that dogs suffer from.

Below we look at what kinds of aggression a dog may suffer from either as a puppy or as a mature dog. But what is important to remember is that some dogs may only show one kind of aggression whilst others may show several.

1. Dominance - This kind of aggression will occur in a dog who thinks that they are in fact the alpha member (leader of the pack) and will use this as a way of asserting their dominance over the others in the pack (you and your family). Most commonly, you will find that male dogs and certain dog breeds are likely to suffer from this kind of aggressive behavior more. But in order for you to control the situation, you need to quickly and fairly establish that you and your family are the leaders in the group and they are at the bottom of the pack hierarchy.

2. Fear - A dog who suffers from this kind of aggression will generally find even the slightest noise can trigger an episode. In most cases such dogs will generally only growl, bark, bare their teeth or snap at the thing, which they are afraid or unsure of. However, should a owner choose to ignore the warning signs that their dog is suffering from this form of aggression it could lead to much more serious problems in the future. If left uncontrolled such dogs could end up causing injury to others as they may retaliate to the situation by biting what they feel is a threat to them.

3. Territorial/Over Protective - When a dog suffers from this kind of aggressive behavior if left and the owner chooses to ignore the problem they will become a danger to all those around them and not just to those they see as strangers or predators. This kind of problem will not be one that is a problem for the owner at home, but will also be one that will become a problem when the dog is away from it as well.

4. Possessive - This can make a real Jekyll and Hyde out of your dog, one minute they can loving and playful the next they are baring their teeth or snapping at you. This will normally occur when you approach something that they consider to be theirs. In many cases, a major trigger for this type of aggression is when you approach them when they are eating. If you want to stop this problem, you need to react as soon as you notice it occurring.

5. Punishment - Often this particular type of aggressive behavior will occur in dogs that have been abused by their owners, especially where owners have tried to exert too much dominance over their animal. Normally a dog will not react aggressively towards their owner when being punished, but if an owner punishes the animal too much then over time things can change. One day an owner may suddenly find without any kind of warning their dogs turning on them.

Above we have looked at just a few of the types of aggression, which a dog may suffer from. Only once you are able to identify just what type of aggressive behaviour it is your dog suffers from, can you then find the right kind of dog aggression training for them. A quick search of the internet and you are going to be able to quite easily find the right kind of training for both you and your dog.

Identifying Arthritis in Dogs

Posted on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 6:20 am

by Dane Masters

There’s nothing worse than having to watch your pooch suffer from arthritis pain. You can tell by the look in their eye they hurt. Chances are you desperately want to do something to ease their misery. The good news is there are things you can do to slow down the progression of this painful disease, or perhaps prevent it from ever happening at all!

Arthritis is considered by many to be an auto-immune disease which causes the body to attack its own healthy tissue in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. In dogs, arthritis can appear in many forms and can’t affect canines of all ages.

This disease affects the cartilage of the joints and causes it to degenerate. Since cartilage connects and projects the joints between bones, when cartilage breaks down it can lead to the bones rubbing against each other which is very painful. In dogs, most owners will first notice arthritis in the major joints such as the hips and knees, although arthritis can affect any joint in the body.

Symptoms of arthritis in dogs include:

v Difficulty sitting, standing, or getting up from the floor or bed
v Favoring a limb
v Decreased activity, sleeping more, lack of interest in play
v Weight gain
v Attitude or behavior changes
v Appearing to have stiffness or sore joints
v Swelling around the joints

In humans there are many different ways to treat arthritis, and many of these methods involve multiple forms of treatment and many doctors visits. This may not be an option with your dog, but don’t despair as there are methods of treating your canine’s arthritis without shelling out tons of money to your vet. Glucosamine is considered one of the best ways to help with arthritis, as it provides a compound that is often lacking in older dogs or dogs with arthritis and can help their bodies regenerate cartilage tissue.

Chondroitin is a cartilage element believed to restrain the enzymes that break down cartilage. Glucosamine and chondroitin are both essential to maintaining healthy joints. Together they protect and rejuvenate the cartilage tissues.

Glucosamine plus chondroitin has been clinically proven to prevent arthritis symptoms in rats with arthritis in up to 54% of cases, as opposed to 96.5% of the group that received no treatment. What this means is that by giving your dog this compound you have an over 50% chance of helping them get rid of some, if not all of their arthritis symptoms.

If your dog is stiff or sore as a result of surgery or injury, he may have a form of secondary arthritis. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements are also effective on this condition as well as osteoarthritis.

While most studies have found no problems with treating dogs with arthritis, or preventing arthritis by giving your dog glucosamine and chondroitin supplements, it is still recommended that you consult with your veterinarian before proceeding with this method of treatment to make sure it is safe for your canine.

Choosing a Dog Breed

Posted on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 7:18 am

by Lee Dobbins

When choosing a dog breed it is important to first look at your lifestyle and then at what type of dog breed fits that lifestyle. You need to be able to determine how much time a day you can devote to your dog including puppy training, socializing, classes and other activities. Puppies take up a lot of time that you may not have available.

You also need to determine if you or your family is allergic to any specific type of dog. Some individuals can tolerate specific types of breeds while others may have problems with any type of dog. Or perhaps you are the lucky one with no animal allergies.

You also need to take into account the cost of your dog. Certain breed will cost more than others. Remember that when looking at the whole package the actual cost of the dog isn’t that high compared to everything you need to pay for once you have the dog. You will need to pay for shots, crates/cage, obedience school, inoculations, feeding and other accessories. You will be constantly spending money on your dog.

Where you live and how much time you can spend with your animal will factor into the type of dog breed you select. Dogs tend to be very social and like being around people. So you need to spend time with your animal. Additionally if you have a small apartment then you don’t want to get a giant dog breed. If you are not at home a lot then there are a few dog breeds that take to the solitary life very well.

You should look into what size dog will fit your lifestyle the best. Dog breeds come in small, medium, large or giant breeds. Once you have selected your breed you should read up and get as much information as possible about your chosen dog breed.

You can find general dog breed information in books and also on the internet. If you are looking to have some specific questions answered then you may want to speak with a local dog breeder, veterinarian, kennel club or groomer. It is important to find a reliable breeder to obtain a healthy dog and any of these avenues can provide you with the correct information.

If the breed of your dog doesn’t matter then you may want to rescue a puppy form your local animal shelter. There are always animals that need a home and you can get a puppy for free.

Looking For A Fake Pug Breeder

Posted on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 1:19 pm

by Jenny Donaldson

Most of the important decisions you will make in your life require a process to make sure you make the right decision. The decision to get a Pug as the new family pet is a decision like that. Once you have made the decision to get a Pug the next step in the process is to learn how to tell a fake Pug breeder from a good one so that you do not wind up doing business with a breeder you will later regret. There are some indicators you can use that can help you make this decision and it is up to you to do your homework so that you can be assured of making the right decision.

On the Internet you will find organizations called breeder registries. A breeder registry establishes breeding standards through years of experience and research and allows breeders to list themselves with the registry so long as the breeder adheres to the breeding standards. If you are dealing with a Pug breeder that is not listed with a registry then that may be something that might point to a fake Pug breeder.

There is no substitute for a vet when it comes to a resource for valuable pet information. When you are looking for a Pug breeder you can always run the names of prospective breeders by your vet and see if they have any advice to offer you on the Pug breeders you are considering.

Your vet can also give you more ways to determine the validity of a breeder that can help you narrow down the field even further into a list of breeders you should be able to trust. Never underestimate the value of the information your vet can provide.

If the Pug breeders you are considering have any past run-ins with the local law officials then you would want to know that. That is why it is always a good idea to check with local law enforcement before deciding on a Pug breeder. If you are considering a breeder that has a criminal record then that could be the indication of a fake breeder and a breeder you want to avoid.

Talking to each potential Pug breeder can also help you tell the fakes from the real deal. Ask potential Pug breeders about their policy of helping a new owner know how to feed and care for their new pup. A good Pug breeder will make sure the new owner leaves with care and feeding instructions as well as a food sample so you know what to feed your dog.

If the breeder you are considering does not offer this then you may be talking to a breeder that is not complete legitimate and will require further research before you can safely do business with them.

The process of getting a new pet is a long one that requires patience and making the right decisions. To help yourself out you can use questions and the tools available to eliminate any of the fake Pug breeders so that you do not waste time talking to people you do not want to do business with. Doing your homework before investing in a new pet is the responsibility of every pet owner.

How To Find A Bichon Frise Rescue

Posted on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 7:59 am

by Mary Stevenson

If you want to rescue a Bichon Frise instead of buying a puppy, good for you! You can keep checking your local animal shelters for Bichon Frise dogs, but that can be iffy at best. However, you could ask the animal shelter workers if they know of any Bichon Frise rescue groups in your area. There are breed rescue groups for almost every dog breed imaginable. Since the Bichon Frise is such a popular breed, the chances are there is a Bichon Frise rescue group within driving distance.

You do have to use some common sense before selecting which Bichon Frise rescue sounds best for you. Picking the rescue group will go a long way to getting a compatible dog that fits in with your home and lifestyle. There are some puppy mills and other disreputable places that call themselves Bichon Frise rescues but really are just trying to take advantage of your kind heart.

There are many places online to find reputable Bichon Frise rescue groups. One is Petfinder.com, which can help narrow your search considerably. Another is the Bichon Frise Club of America’s website, which includes a large section on rescue organizations in the nation. However, there is not a comprehensive national Bichon Frise list on the web. Be prepared to spend some time with your favorite search engine to find a Bichon Frise rescue group near you.

You might find web sites that claim to be Bichon Frise rescues, but they are really just virtual fronts for puppy mills. If the rescue group offers more than two breeds, be wary, especially if those breeds don’t have much to do with each other. Bichon Frise and Toy Poodle would be a logical rescue breed combination, as they have similar needs. But a Bichon Frise and an English Bulldog rescue group should make you very suspicious. If they offer to take orders for puppies it is defiantly a puppy mill and not a genuine humane rescue group.

A good Bichon Frise rescue will never put in an order for a puppy or treat their dogs like merchandise. They should be up front in telling you that the adoption process should take weeks or months. Good Bichon Frise dogs can be found at Petfinder.com, the Bichon Frise Club of America web site and the AKC website.

There will usually only be adult male Bichon Frise dogs to adopt, as the waiting list for a female is considerable. Expect to have your home checked out just as thoroughly, too.

Another sign is that the pictures of the Bichon Frise dogs will not look like any of the show dogs you see on televised dog shows. They will often seem too big, their coats too corkscrewed and their coats full of stains. They still are Bichon Frise, but not show quality Bichon Frise.

Although some rescue dogs will have pedigrees, most will not. However, there’s no real guarantee that the written pedigree for a purebred is the honest truth! Care more for the character of the dog rather than the looks.
