Preparing for Your Child’s College Education

Posted on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 7:27 am

by Michael Benifez

As college costs increase, it can be intimidating to find ways to save up for your child’s education. Many parents know that they need to start saving money early, but they might not know where to start or how to start. Children are not cheap. One of the most expensive parts of raising a child is the college education.

Increasing College Costs

Although inflation in the United States has stayed relatively low, the inflation rate for college has more than doubled. Inflation for college costs averages between 3 and 7 percent each year, depending on the type of college or university.

The estimated four-year total (including tuition, room, and board) for a public university will be close to $85,000 by the year 2011, according to www.collegeboard.com. By 2016, the website estimates, the cost will be close to $115,000. The cost for a private education will be even higher.

What Parents Must Understand

There are two key things that parents must understand when saving for college educations.

1. Inform your children that paying for college is a joint responsibility. You should tell them early on how much you are able to contribute, and how much they should be prepared to contribute for their educations.

Although it would be wonderful if they can find a college that costs less or equal to what you are able to contribute, your children should be aware that they may need to take out scholarships and loans to fund the rest of their education. Your children should be prepared to take summer jobs and look for grants.

2. Get started early. Let compounding interest work for you by building principle early and let the interest accumulate. You should continue to contribute to the savings if possible, but starting early will give you a good head start.

Funding Your Student’s Education

Don’t expect to be able to rely on scholarships and grants to pay for your children’s educational loans. You will need to save some money to help pay for your child’s college education or consolidate with consolidation loans.

As you begin the process of saving for college, you need to first decide what kinds of accounts you would like to use for saving the money. There are various options available to parents and relatives.

Uniform Gift to Minors account: This account puts the savings in your child’s name. You, the parent, have no ownership rights to the account but will control the account until your child comes of age. This means that you will control the account until your child usually turns either 18 or 21, depending on your state.

Coverdell Education Savings Account (CSEA): Parents who qualify for this account - those families with gross income below $190,000 - are allowed to contribute up to $2,000 per child per year. The contribution isn’t tax deductible but the earnings are tax deferred.

State-Sponsored Prepaid tuition Plan: These plans promise that your investment in the plan will cover tuition at any public school in your state. It will not matter what the tuition is for the school when your child enrolls; the price is locked in when you make your investment.

State-Sponsored College Savings Plans: Individual states have these plans, but do not require the parent or student to be a resident of the state or attend college in the state. You can find more information about the 529 plans at www.collegesavings.org

Traditional Methods: You can save for your child’s education in a variety of accounts. These accounts can include basic savings accounts, investment opportunities, and annuities.

Take Control of Your Medical Billing Denials

Posted on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 5:11 am

by Carl Mays II

It has been accurately stated that you cannot manage what you do not measure. This is particularly true in the arena of medical billing denials. Without a strong Revenue Cycle Denial Management system in place you cannot properly manage this critical element of medical billing. If you are not managing your denials then you are most likely leaving more than 20% of your revenues uncollected.

There is a lot of confusion about the definition of denial management. If you ask five medical billing experts what this means you will probably receive six answers.

Given all of this confusion, how do you find out if your medical billing company or medical billing department is utilizing proper denial management for your practice? A good start is to ask a few simple questions: What do they believe denial management entails? What metrics do they utilize to measure denial management success? How much have they increased your collections in the past 6 months through their denial management system?

It is amazing how few medical billers or medical billing companies understand how proper denial management will dramatically increase the revenue of a practice. They understand the value of working denials, but this is not the only secret to good denial management. Working denials is like bailing water from a leaking ship - it can help keep the ship afloat, but ultimately you really need to fix the leak.

Fixing core denial problems and increasing collections requires keeping track of, understanding the magnitude of, and reporting on every claim that is denied by a payer. Tracking all denial across all payers is critical. The proper denial management system provides the data required to stop the root cause of problems and significantly increase the rate of first claim submission acceptance. If your practice is not measuring this level of detail then money, significant money, is being lost in the flood of denied claims pouring into your practice.

What is typically missing from troubled billing operations is the lack of the management-reporting expertise needed to extract the data in a concise and meaningful way coupled with a lack of methodical, measured billing process needed to correct mistakes. A comprehensive Revenue Cycle Denial Management system has two main purposes. The first purpose is to provide feedback on why claims are denying and how many claims are not being paid on the first submission to the respective payers. The second is to fix these issues. Effective Revenue Cycle Denial Management software databases must be designed to track, quantify, and report on all denials for all payers.

The standard denial management output should track by payer, the number of claims denied and the reason for the denials. This must be coupled with a dashboard reporting tool for quick visual management. With these reports the billing team can easily identify which payers are inappropriately denying claims; they can also compare these payers to their peers for proper trending and follow-up. This output allows the medical billing team to develop and refine payer specific rules to prevent future payer denials by insuring all claims are clean when they are submitted.

With the analytical capabilities available, the medical billing department or medical billing company can identify systemic medical billing problems, create and test solutions to the problems and implement process changes that will increase collections AND drive down medical billing costs. One example of this is pursuit of Clean Claim Law violators with the denial data produced from the denial management system.

As previously mentioned, an effective denial management system is critical for your practice if you want to improve your medical billing and hasten your collections. Implementation of the proper system can easily increase collections by more than 10% and could even exceed a 20% increase in collections.

Aging Gracefully - Anatomy Of The Human Body

by Tommy Griffin

It’s an fascinating observation as to why our elderly yrs are addressed the golden yrs. I guess when 1 comprehends what these years were originally intended to be like, that may have been a proper description. The study of the anatomy of the human body has established that there are very clear signs of the maturing body, far before we became consciously aware of it ourselves. Sure there’s days that we get up filled with aches and pains, but in the young to middle years we find an excuse for it. For good example, I played too much ball yesterday, or I elevated too much at work. Then all of a sudden one day, when we wake up to the unchanged aches and pains, its because we are growing old.

The anatomy of the human body have got to be 1 of the most fascinating aspects present on world. There is so very much that we have came to know about it, but so believably as equality as much, that we don’t know.

Possibly if we engaged a personalized concern in reading what our bodies are completely about, and what they are performing we could go back to relishing the golden years. The anatomy of the human body is although very tangled ,also very elementary to get to know if 1 takes the time. Young people in their mid-twenties, are on top of the universe both mentally and physically with their entire life ahead of them in years hopefully , just will it be in optimal health is the real question. To begin with the ageing procedure has begun. We begin with close to a billion neurons in our brain ,and by the time we are in our twenties they have led off to dwindle. Within about 10 yrs we could be suffering as much as ten thousanda day. Now that is made to have several time of shock on us. From a medical point of view, this loss is affecting our memory, co-ordination and brain function. The anatomy of the human body is certain to vary.

Youngsters old bones substitute themselves really promptly, more or less within a 2 yr period. This is really the replacement of old bone material with new. In grownups this replacing can get up 10 yr. Up until the mid 20s bone denseness continues to gain. After thirty five bone loss begins, and the ageing process has begun.

Around fifty five our gut begins to become abandoned. All that good bacteria that’s suppose to be there is evaporating. So at present the stomach irritations begin, and poor digestion becomes evident.

These are only a few of the aging processes that take place in our body, and we have the anatomy of the human body, to thank for bringing us into our golden years.

How to Speak English as like Native Speaker

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 9:24 am

by James Smith

CDs are a great tool for listening and learning the English language. They are comparable to traditional language schools. The advantage with the CD is that it is portable and cheaper than school. You can learn as you go or never leave the comfort of your own home. You can work at your own pace and set your own study hours.

Another option available is the English textbook. Various printed materials are easily accessible and they all come with a CD or DVD. It is impossible to learn the nuances, pronunciation, and tones that are needed to speak English correctly without hearing them. Simply reading alone will not suffice.

Make sure that you do not skip lessons, because they are built contextually on one another. If you skip it for something easier later in the book, you may miss important concepts that will help you understand later chapters. The flexibility of learning English on your own allows you to never have to skip a lesson. If you were taking classes at a language school, one missed class could be a crucial mistake.

Once common problem, however, with learning on your own is inconsistency. If you are lazy about your studies, you will not learn English very quickly. It is important to maintain a schedule and stick to it. Set goals for you to achieve each day and then work hard to reach them. If you have a hard time sticking with your planned approach, then consider signing up for an online class. They will set the goals and assignments for you.

One of the best ways to learn English quickly is to study with an English-speaking family. You will hear it used in everyday life. You will hear key pronunciation, tones, and inflections of the voices in a normal environment. You will even notice their body language while they are speaking. You can then compare your own speech with theirs to see where you need to improve. Even if you are in another country where an English-speaking family is not easy to find, there are still other ways you can get in contact with one.

Whatever method you decide is right for you, each of them will require much self-discipline and a strong desire to stick with it. It’s easy to get discouraged when you feel that you are not learning quite fast enough, but don’t despair. If you are willing to work hard, the possibility to learn English is right at your fingertips.

Learn to Be a Dynamic Student

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 9:13 am

by Dr Jay Polmar

DYNAMIC SPEED READING becomes a part of long-term memory. We believe this is caused by intense concentration. Intense concentration causes the altering of states of consciousness which, in turn, accesses long-term memory.

The other factor is eidetic or auditory memories. You can remember everything you have ever seen or heard, even if you weren’t paying attention to what was said. Your brain/mind, like a computer, stores all memories.

As you start to learn the various methods used in the BE DYNAMIC THROUGH SPEED READING, you’ll notice some intentional redundancy, repetition! It is techniques repeated over and over, with visualization and various other added methods that will help you achieve the results you desire and be the best you can possibly be.

All of this will make you a better student, employee, communicator, and decision maker in your life. And only one of your benefits will be that you will cut reading time on reports, memos, correspondence, newspapers, novels, non-fiction, magazine, etc. You will save time, and the saying goes …”time is money”.

Writers get paid by the word in articles and by % of gross sales (royalties) in book publishing; usually the thicker the book the higher the price and the higher the royalty. Writers are unnecessary verbose. What this means is there are many words within sentences that are just there as fillers; what you have to learn to do, through the Be Dynamic Through Speed Reading program, is only read the words that are essential.

Dr. Jay Palmar created the “Be Dynamic Through Speed Reading” program to share these valuable tools with students to help them get the most out of their reading experience.

Change Your Child’s Attitude In One Minute

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 8:19 am

by Kim Patrick

There are several ways to help your child change their attitude quickly and easily. I just want to touch upon one of them right now for you. You must take control as the parent.

Yes, it does sound really simple but let me tell you that not all parents do this. As parents we need to give specific directions instead of requesting things. Our kids should know without a doubt that we are the boss. You don’t need to let them know this in a rude way. Be gentle yet firm in your dealings with them.

Once you are sounding like you are in control you are on your way to actually being in control. Kids need to know that their parents are the boss. What’s more, if you don’t show the child that you are the boss, kids will often assume control by default, and you don’t want that to happen.

When a child doesn’t do what you ask them to do, you need to say to them, “what are you supposed to be doing?” Then the next thing you need to say is “do it”. This makes sure that the child knows exactly what they should be doing. Then there can be no excuses.

It can be horrible when a child tries to engage in a power struggle about what they should or shouldn’t be doing. But there is a secret in all of this. When you tell them what they should be doing, then you should turn and walk away to disengage with them. You don’t want to give them the opportunity to talk back to you.

There can be no argument with only one party. One more thing, make sure you do not ask your child to give you explanations as to why they did or didn’t do something. If we do that we are actually training our kids to give us excuses. If you don’t ask your child for an excuse chances are you won’t get one.

So this is one very simple way to turn around your kid’s attitude in less than one week. But always remember, change must start with the parent first, then the kid.

Top - Ranked College

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 8:05 am

by Dane Masters

Why Should You Attend a Top - Ranked College? How About - Instant Access to a Prestigious Social and Professional Network.

If you’re a high school junior or senior, you might be wondering how much of a difference going to a top ranked college really makes. Should you put in the extra time and effort to maintain a higher GPA so you’ll be able to get into an elite school, or can you afford to back off a bit and enjoy what’s supposed to be the best years of your life? After all, as long as you get a degree from somewhere, you’ll be set. Right?

Despite this sort of thinking, most graduates fail to get good jobs with enticing salaries. Why is this so? It is because most well-known companies prefer to have as their employees, graduates from the Universities of Northwestern or Pennsylvania or Harvard. Graduates from mediocre colleges or unknown schools only rank second on their lists. So, the college or school does matter. The more elite, the better! Newspaper articles that claim, for example, MBA graduates drawing salaries of up to $100,000 a year, do not mention these facts. Hence, it is advisable that youngsters wishing to have a bright future work extra hard to get admission into a well-reputed school or college.

School rankings are calculated differently by different sources, so it’s important to understand how the rankings were determined before accepting them as valid for your purposes. It’s also important to note that the order of the top ranked colleges changes year after year. Sometimes these changes are for significant reasons, such as loss of funding, fewer academic programs, or lack of a distinguished faculty; however, sometimes the changes are for minor reasons that happen to carry weight with a particular ranking system. You should read the source explanations thoroughly in order to understand how the rankings were derived and which factors can change them.

There is still an element of uncertainty when a student wants to opt for a particular college. General rankings are not enough to go by. One has to find out if that particular school or college is top where certain academic courses are concerned or top in overall rankings. For instance, a person wishing to pursue engineering studies would be better off going to MIT since it is the best in the field, rather than going to Yale which has an overall “best” rating. So unless the sophomore is uncertain about whether he will stick on with a particular course for the whole year or change midway, he/she would be well advised to go to only a school offering that particular discipline. The “uncertain” student may opt for the highest ranking college in general.

The next question would be, “where can you see the list of topmost colleges in the country”? Apart from the national magazine which contributes an entire issue to overall rankings of colleges, there are other places to search–books, the Internet, and annual school guides.

If the idea is to have a comfortable lifestyle in the future, then the time to work is during the high school years. A little effort and sacrifice will ensure that the coming years provide huge benefits.

Beware of Scholarship Scams

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 6:49 am

by Arlene Waxman

It happens annually. Students and their families are cheated by scholarship scammers…people who promise to help them land scholarships and financial aid they wouldn’t otherwise receive.

One financial aid organization believes these scammers defraud families out of more than $150 million dollars each and every year. Others think that figure may be far too low.

They do it by preying on families worried about the cost of college: families who have never been through the financial aid process before and thus know little or nothing about it.

It all starts with a letter from a company with a name that makes it sound like a benign organization whose mission is to assist students and their families.

The letter often looks like it comes from a top college or university. That is in no way an accident. The font size, the high grade letterhead, and even the company logo are chosen by the scammers to give the letter an “academic look”. It is the very worst kind of junk mail, but that isn’t what it appears to be. As a result, instead of throwing the letter away, most families open it. That’s their first mistake.

The letters generally start by appealing to a family’s fear by talking about the high cost of college. Often the letters exaggerate the cost.

But, the letter says, we can help you get the financial aid you will need. We can teach you how to receive more financial aid than you would ever get on your own. In some instances, the letters will mention “secrets” colleges don’t want you to know. Sometimes the letters will talk about millions of dollars in unused scholarships and financial aid; money just waiting to be found by students who know the ropes.

What all the letters have in common is that they invite families to a free information session at a local hotel function room or similar venue. Because the letter offers the promise of extra financial aid, and because the information session is free, many families eagerly accept the invitation thinking they have nothing to lose. That is mistake #2.

Ultimately, attendees are subject to a group sales pitch for the company’s services. The pitches are not exactly the same, but all promise that their services will result in students receiving more money for college. And, none tell you that everything they offer is either unnecessary or can be gotten elsewhere at no cost.

The group pitch is followed by individual meetings during which families are heavily pressured to immediately write a check for the services offered. All too many families yield to the pressure, writing checks of up to $1,000 or more in exchange for a set of services worth absolutely nothing.

It is very sad. And, it happens every year. Don’t fall for this kind of scam. Get all of your financial aid and scholarship advice from your high school counselor, college admissions and financial aid counselors, and the dozens of reputable publications and websites.

There is no reason to pay any individual or organization to help you secure a scholarship or any form of financial aid. If you do, you will only be putting money in the pocket of a scammer.

Need Help To Find Accredited Home School Programs?

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 6:44 am

by Andy Austim

The term home school refers to a type of educational system that exists outside of the regular educational framework. Usually home schooling is administered by the parents of the child, although sometimes parents may employ a teacher to implement the curriculum of accredited home school programs.

The scope and sequence of the curriculum used in many accredited home school programs is similar to that of public schools. Parents can have confidence that their children’s home school education will be comparable to that of a public school.

Home study is not the same as home schooling. The term home study simply means that studies are carried out from home temporarily due to a student’s confinement to home and thus being unable to attend regular classes. Unlike accredited home school programs, home study does not give parents control over what or how their children will learn.

Accredited home schools offer programs that are suitable for students from the pre-school level all the way up to high school. Participation is not based on status or age and any student can be taught effectively. Either the mother or the father or both can teach home school curricula to the student.

The reasons parents are choosing accredited home school programs are varied. Some may think that home schooling gives them more say in the curriculum and methodology of the education that their child receives, while others appreciate the opportunity to develop a closer bond with their child. Some children may have requirements that just cannot be provided by mainstream schools.

Accredited home school programs can provide many benefits and alleviate stress for families with special needs. For instance, children who live far from public schools in rural areas may not have access to a bus because one may not be provided. In this case, a home school program would be very beneficial.

Home schools are becoming more popular all over the United States. Many home school advocates think it’s a perfect way of keeping their kids safe from drugs, gangs, and other anti-social factors. The number of children that are home-schooled increases every year as we witness more violence happening in public schools. With the many accredited home programs available, parents can have a greater degree of control over their childrens safety and well-being as well as their educational needs.

Does Your Dryer Exhaust System Meet Safety Standards?

Posted on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 6:32 am

by Horatio Chiorean

If you are pretty good about the maintenance of your household appliances, you are quite a bit ahead of many other people. But there are some things you may not know to check for that can still crop up and cause you problems in your clothes dryer. One of these things is making sure you have the best dryer exhaust system for your dryer.

UL Safety Standards

The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has tested products for consumer safety for more than a century. They apply the UL rating to appliances; it should be printed on a label somewhere on your clothes dryer or in the paperwork that it came with. Newer clothes dryers probably meet UL safety standards, but if it was purchased and hooked up to the existing dryer exhaust system, there could be a problem. Safety standards have been updated and older dryer vent systems have been found to be unsafe for a number of reasons.

Shortest Distance

Just like so many other things in life, the shortest distance to the destination is the best plan of action for your clothes dryer. The vent system has to carry hot air and lint out of your home and the more piping it has to work through the harder it has to work. Additionally, the more line there is to make it through the more chance that lint will get caught up in the line and start to clog up the pipes which can cause a fire hazard and reduce the efficiency of your dryer.

Bends and Elbows

Not all clothes dryers are located on an outside wall where the vent tube is very short and goes straight outside. Sometimes there are elbows and 90 degree bends to bypass whatever obstructions there may be before it leads to the outside vent. This will cause your dryer to work harder to do its job and increase the chance of lint clogging the system. The restricted air flow causes the hot, moist air to stay in the dryer drum, with your wet laundry. Your dryer will run longer to get the clothes dry, use more energy and eventually, overheat and cause a fire.

Rough Inside

It has been discovered that screws and fasteners holding sections of dryer ducts together can cause problems. Lint catches on the protruding screws and builds up to form a clog and restrict air flow. Sections should be fastened so that there are no protrusions on the inside of the ducts.

The parts that make up your dryer exhaust and vent system must meet today’s safety codes to ensure safety and efficient performance. If you are unsure of your dryer vent system, you should have a professional who specializes in dryer vent cleaning and maintenance do an inspection. The service fee is little compared to the energy savings of a healthy dryer vent system and the reassurance that your home is safe from a fire hazard.
