Avoiding Annual Gutter Cleaning

Posted on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 6:09 am

by Sock Woodruff

The fall and spring seasons cause many homeowners a lot of work every year. At these times, nature rains down stuff on our homes other than rain. This could include a lot of detritus from trees, leaves, pine needles, twigs, spring flowers off the trees (birch, oak, maple, cottonwoods, etc.), seeds and seed pods, not to mention things like the ball one of the kids threw up on the roof. All of this can accumulate in your gutters.

One of the seasonal tasks many homeowners have (sometimes more than once a year) is the need to clean out rain gutters on your house. Your rain gutters were put there to protect your house. They collect the rain that falls on your roof and channel it down the downspouts and away from your walls and foundation.

But all of that other stuff that fell on your roof, including bits of dirt and dust, can be blown into and collect in those rain gutters. When the rain runs down the roof, it washes all this into the rain gutter. Of course, the idea was that it would all run down the downspout, onto the splash blocks, and out on the grass.

Have you ever heard the adage, “Murphy is alive and well”? “Murphy’s Law” says that whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Think of that list of things that can be washed down into you rain gutters. On a larger scale, beavers use stuff like that to build dams. On a smaller scale, that’s what can also happen in you rain gutters.

Material collects in the gutter instead of coming down the downspout. Once there is a little bit there, it catches and collects more. After a while the gutter may become clogged and the water runs right over the edge of the gutter, falling on the ground next to your foundation, splashing mud on the walls and maybe leaking into your basement-exactly what you installed gutters to avoid.

So, time to get out the ladder, climb up, and dig all the accumulated debris out of the rain gutter, right? Why do this every year, or sometimes two or more times a year? Do you really feel comfortable and safe wobbling around on top of a ladder, leaning way out to get that handful of leaves or bit of debris that is just out of reach?

There is another solution available. You can install some kind of cover that will deflect the big stuff (relatively speaking) and let the water freely flow into the gutter and down the downspout, like it was intended to do.

These devices come in different forms and have different names. They include gutter covers, gutter screens, gutter filters and hybrid gutter hoods that combine the hood and screen designs. They are installed on top of (or in) the gutter just below the eaves.

One simple design is a gutter screen, which uses some form of screen to catch the solids and pass the water. Most of the material caught by the screen may be blown off the screen; however, sometimes some material gets caught in the screen holes and accumulates on top. The stem tips from oak or maple leaves, or pine needles, can pass trough the holes. Sometimes they get caught in the screen and neither wind nor water will blow them off. Screens are simple to install and keep most of the leaves and debris out of your gutters. As one of the least expensive options, screens are a popular choice to combat clogged gutters.

A gutter hood is usually a solid vinyl, PVC, or aluminum cover with narrow slots. It is more successful at not accumulating leaves-the stems or points can’t pass through the slots. The hood covers the entire gutter and has just a tiny channel for the water to enter the gutter. The debris dries off and then blows off more easily.

A hybrid gutter cover is much the same as a hood with many of the features of the gutter screen. There are many types of hybrids and the slots where the water enters can be holes, slits or even grids. These are also quite successful in allowing the debris to blow off.

A newer technology is the gutter filter. This system uses a filter membrane installed inside the gutter. The idea is to fill up the gutter with something that will allow it to function and keep the water flowing. The water goes through the sponge like material, the debris rests on top, dries out after the rain stops, and blows away. The filter does not absorb water nor does it allow plants to seed and grow.

In other words, there are options available that can keep your rain gutters open, clean, and unclogged by leaves, twigs, and other debris. For information on many different types and styles of gutter protection products go to GutterSupply.com. They have pictures and more product information.

You can undertake installing them yourself, but that puts you back wobbling around on top of a ladder. On the other hand, you can contact a gutter contractor. He can help you with your selection and do the installation-while you stay safely on the ground and enjoy the view. From then on, you can spend more days out doing whatever you (or your significant other) would prefer to do.

Do You Want To Learn About The Human Circulatory System

Posted on Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at 3:30 am

by Xiong Zhe

If you take a closer peep at theIf you take a see If you look close enough at the circulatory system, it will look like a big ball of wool that a kitty has gotten hold of, and made it into one big tangled fix. In Reality the circulatory system is likely a lot easier to sort out then that wool would be.

Our general wisdom of the heart is, we know if its not working right we may suffer a heart attack. That there are four chambers in the heart, and that there is a entire string of veins and arteries We dont know a whole lot about these except, that if we cut an artery we could bleed to death easily. Another thing that we usually learn, is we know that if we have too much fat in our blood, then cholesterol has something to do with it, and its not good for us. That may be what we know of the circulatory system. But if you stop and think, that’s is quite an amount of wisdom.

If we had just a a couple more details to our wisdom it may cause many us to reckon about how it actually affects our entire bodies, and that by familiarizing what it requires, and why it requires certain items, we will be all the more likely to ensure it gets it.

At times to thoroughly visualize something it helps to paint a picture. So let me do something the same to that here ,and give you something that is easy to see.

Visualize a two lane main road. One is going North the other South. At the start of the highway going south is a big manufacturing industrial plant (the heart). In this industrial plant are four rooms (four chambers of the heart) that from each one develop a material, for the last merchandise that this company makes(the enriched oxygen filled blood cells). This good product is pumped out into containers (arteries). These containers are at once carried away from the industrial plant (heart) down the main road (the blood flow) to various storehouses on the way(body organs that require the enriched cells.)

Now in the other direction coming down the North main road is containers (veins) arriving back toward the industrial plant. These containers are containing waste materials (blood that requires to be re oxygenated) These are dropped off at the plant (heart) where it will be refurbished(re oxygenated) and then transported out once again in the good containers (arteries).

This process takes place again and again continuously. This scenerio is only represented this way as a visual image, to merely aid you know how the circulatory system works.

If we wanted to, we could continue with this visualization as to what occurs in the four rooms (chambers of the heart) in order to get the good merchandise ready.

Hopefully this has given you a little more apprehension of how the system works and the grandness of it . For example going back to our visualisation, if one good were to fail then it would have a direct affect on all the other steps. This is incisively would befall on in our bodies.

Continuing Care Program: Am I Choosing the Right Career?

Posted on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 6:35 am

by Amy Nutt

Medical professionals have many options as they enter the job market. One of these is to enter a continuing care program. Continuing care programs vary tremendously from company to company, but they all have one thing in common. All continuing care careers give medical professionals the chance to provide long-term care to individuals, either in their homes or in specialized treatment facilities.

Types of Career Opportunities in Continuing Care Programs

Continuing care professionals fill a much-needed gap in the community. Certain demographics of people need continuing care and support even when their traditional medical needs have been met. For instance, an elderly individual who has had serious surgery may need some additional support during recovery outside of what the hospital can provide. Continuing care programs allow nurses and caregivers to provide that help as long as it is needed.

If you choose a career in continuing care, you could be providing your services in a hospital, nursing home, or other long-term medical facility. Nurses and therapists are often needed to fulfill these needs. Nurses who wish they could spend more time with their patients, interacting with them on a day-to-day basis, and getting to know them as individuals rather than cases on a piece of paper often find this line of work rewarding.

Hospice care is another field of continuing care. Hospice nurses help those who are in their last days live them out as comfortably as possible while being surrounded by their friends and family members in a warm, supportive environment. Working as a hospice nurse is not the career for everyone. It takes a special individual to care for the dying, but hospice nurses provide a much-needed service to the family members of someone who is suffering from a terminal condition.

Nursing home care is another possibility for those seeking continuing care careers. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities need nurses, therapists, and aids who can ensure that their residents have their medical and comfort needs met at all times. Most of these facilities need staff on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which means there is a high demand for professionals in this line of work. Similarly, assisted living facilities for those with developmental disabilities are in need of continuing care professionals.

Benefits and Downsides to Working in a Continuing Care Program

Choosing a career in continuing care provides many benefits. First, you will be making a difference in the community among those who desperately need your services. Because you are interacting with your patients on a regular basis for a long period of time, you are able to get to know them on a more personal level than is possible in other nursing careers.

Another benefit of choosing a career in continuing care is the fact that there is a huge demand for these types of services. New medical technology is making it possible for people to undergo surgical procedures that were formerly impossible, and many of these individuals need continuing therapy after they are out of the hospital. Similarly, people are living longer and longer today, and the elderly frequently need continuing care, whether they are living at home or in an assisted living facility.

Of course, working with the elderly or those who are suffering from terminal illnesses can be emotionally draining. This is definitely something to keep in mind if you are considering a career in continuing care. If, however, you see yourself meeting a need in your community, working in an industry where you can really get to know your patients, and enjoying a job that has job security, then taking a continuing care program at the Halifax college may be the right career path for you to consider.

by Ajay K

A hungry man is never a free man, and if you cannot feed thousands or hundreds, just feed one. You will have played your part in making this world a better place. Those are the two salient guidelines that we follow in trying to make India a place free of poverty and misery.

It takes a whole village to raise a child, so says a well-known African proverb. That is why this foundation endeavors to assist poverty-stricken children in India get a renewed hope in life.

The society has a role to play in bringing up children. Not because it is obliged to do so by law. It is the right thing to do even by the laws of God. It is due to this consideration that the Akshayapatra foundation was set up with the sole purpose of reducing poverty in India. This is no doubt the most effective way of giving a ray of hope to the less fortunate children of India courtesy of good education.

Poverty is a close brother of illiteracy. This was confirmed by a study carried out by the organization. The study found out that incidences of illiteracy are highest where the levels of poverty are high. It is for this reason that the charitable organization focused its effort to eliminating poverty in India while at the same time giving the children an opportunity to acquire formal education as a stepping-stone to the future.

This effort is largely hampered by inadequate financial resources. It is a well-known fact that poverty and illiteracy are a big threat even to world peace. Mass demonstrations have been witnessed because of poverty and inequality in the society. Corporate organizations have awoken to this reality and chipped in to donate for children in order to end poverty and make the world a better place to live.

The number of children who die in India each year because of poverty and other preventable diseases is as high as 2.5 million in a year. Many more are forced to engage in child labor to earn a living. This is always at the expense of education. Consequently, such children fail to reap the fruits that come with a good education. It is this trend that, the Akshayapatra foundation wishes to change with your help.

The good news is that it is not out of our hands yet as the current generation. Always seek to be the change you want to see. You can change the destiny of these less fortunate children by donating for their welfare. Donations are always accepted whether on line or through volunteering. Either way you will have touched the life of a needy child.

Living Christmas Tree Focus of a Green Christmas

Posted on Monday, December 1, 2008 at 5:09 am

by Terra Hangen

A fun Christmas tradition is to plant a living Christmas tree in your yard and create a legacy for your family, as you watch the tree grow. For families with plenty of land available, you can plant a tree each year, and even name them for special people, like “Nona’s tree.” Enjoy your decorated tree as the star of your living room for a week before planting it, but before you purchase a living tree, consider the full height that this tiny tree will reach.

Noble Fir, Grand Fir and White Pine are classic Christmas trees that can live for a hundred years and reach 60 to 90 feet tall, and thirty feet in width. Is a tree this size appropriate for your yard? If you have a farm with acreage, you are very blessed, and every tree you plant will provide a home and food for wild birds and other critters.

For typical size yards, dwarf Blue Spruce cultivars are excellent choices, with perfect conical shapes and thick foliage. Fat Albert reaches fifteen feet and Blaukissen or Blue Kiss reaches eight feet tall. Zones 2 or 3 to 7. The conifer Chamaecyparis obtusa Compacta reaches ten feet tall, and Aurea 20 feet tall, in Zones 5-8.

Pines do well in warmer areas, and Calabrian Pine, Pinus brutia, has a classic pine tree shape, grows 30 to 80 feet tall, and thrives in heat, drought and wind. Calabrian Pine cannot take temperatures much below zero F. Zones 6-10. This pine and the closely related Eldarica Pine make perfect windbreaks and bird sanctuaries.

All evergreen trees thrive full sun and well-drained soil away from buildings. If soil freezes in your area, to prepare for your living tree, dig a planting hole earlier in the year and fill it with leaves. In cold climates where snow falls and temperatures reach freezing, keep your tree in an unheated garage or on a porch for a few days, to let it acclimate to the warmer temperature of your house.

These trees need cool temperatures, so keep them indoors for only a week, with plenty of light, and away from heaters or fireplaces. Keep the roots moist but not standing in water. In cold climates before planting outdoors, put the tree back on the porch or in the garage for a few days.

I am celebrating the publication of my new book, co-authored with five other writers, “Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts: Stories to Warm Your Heart and Tips to Simplify Your Holiday.”

In our book I wrote many green thumb Christmas tips, including the story of mistletoe, how to grow myrrh, how to keep your poinsettia perky and how to make a wreath of pine cones. I love the gorgeous and electricity saving LED Christmas lights for our trees, and found a neat online store, All American Christmas Company, at www.aachristmas.com that sells these lights, and www.homedepot.com also sells them. Consumer Reports issued a report lauding LED lights.

Each thing we do, every day, and especially at Christmas, can help the environment. I suggest that folks use gift bags instead of wrap, and re-use the bags many times. I found foil gift bags in gold and in green at a dollar store, and use them for birthdays, Christmas and any gift occasion. So for a fully green Christmas, you could purchase the ideal living tree, light it with LED lights and fill re-usable gift bags with presents under the tree.

Advice in Picking Out Which Fashion Schools Is Right For You

Posted on Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 7:37 am

by Jessica Bradbury

So you have finally made the tough decision to attend fashion school; now the only problem is deciding which fashion school to attend. Whatever it is that you have decided to pursue in life, deciding which school to attend is never the easiest part.

There are a lot of fashion schools you can choose from and if you have been accepted to all the schools where you sent application, that compounds the problem. Deciding which fashion school you are going to attend can be one of the toughest decisions of your life. Preparing a thorough plan for your future in one choice is never easy. But the choice of college you wish to attend could be really tough for you to make.

But there are factors that you can consider to help you with the process of choosing which fashion school would be the best for you. For those who are having a difficult time making the final decision, there are tips available to help you look for the kind of school that suits your needs.

Consider the Location

You’ve got to think about it, as the cost of living in one place differs from another. If you’ve always wanted to experience a “White Christmas”, California based fashion schools may not be your best option. New York based fashion schools would be the better choice in fulfilling your dreams of sleigh bells.

But then again if you don’t like big cities, New York simply won’t do at all will it? Can you stand to be away from your family or would you prefer to distance yourself? Can you afford the cost of living alone away from home? These are some things to consider when it comes to your location. If it helps, make a list of pros and cons and be truthful with yourself. Hopefully that will help you at least narrow down the general location of the fashion school of your choice.

Reputation

For those who want to be ahead of others in the fashion industry, you could choose a fashion school that everybody knows and not a school that no one has even heard of. If you think that a school on your list is one that no one knows about, you could consider looking for a different one.

Your skills speak for themselves but your degree can speak volumes in itself. If you have the choice of getting into and going to a top notch school then you should-so long as the learning environment is suitable for you.

Cost

In deciding what fashion school to go to, you should also consider who is paying for the course. Are you paying for you own education? If so, then the choice of school just became easier. You can choose the school that realistically fits your budget. Consider this, if you can’t afford to attend the school then you won’t be able to go no matter how much you like the ambiance or the location. This is the most important aspect to consider in choosing the appropriate fashion school for you.

Remember, deciding on what fashion school to attend is not easy but you should be able to take not of the factors that you have to consider including some things that you could and would not be able to deal with. So that, the decision making process would not be very difficult for you.

Looking For Home Schooling Supplies?

Posted on Sunday, November 30, 2008 at 3:34 am

by Andy Austim

When you first set out to purchase home schooling supplies, you may find yourself a bit confused as to where you should look. Fortunately, there are many excellent resources available both online and at specialty stores. Whatever your child’s needs may be, you will be able to find exactly the right materials at a reasonable price that will not break the bank.

When it comes to buying suitable home schooling supplies, you have a number of options to choose from. There are a variety of home school curricula and complementary products available, including the usual resource books and textbooks, along with supplemental items such as guidebooks, worksheets, and planning products. You can even find tools to assist with teaching in a home school setting.

In most cases, you will find that with the purchase of a home school curriculum, all of the needed supplies, including testing, will be provided. However, if you are purchasing a more specialized curriculum such as advanced biology, all of the mecessary supplies may not be provided. In that case, you will need to purchase these items separately. These items are usually available through the site where the original curriculum was purchased.

If you want to buy the home schooling supplies products you need without a high extra cost, you will want to try to purchase those products in a bundle. For example, most curricula can be purchased together with added modules for a lower price compared to the same products bought separately.

It could be smart idea to look around for discounter sales and bargains also. This could be a wonderful method to purchase what is necessary at a cheaper price. There are times when you can find previously owned homeschooling items like curriculum sets or tools to teach with that are almost brand new. Something else you can do is join with other families that are home schooling and pool together the cost and responsibilities of teaching.

A good way to find the best prices for your home schooling supplies is to look on the internet. Instead of running all over the place trying to find the best price for products you want to buy, you can browse through various home schooling supplies websites and compare the prices for product as well as research any products reviews.

The experience of home schooling can be a much more enriching and enjoyable one for everyone involved if you have the best curriculum, home schooling supplies, and other tools you can afford. It is important to remember to always purchase quality materials, particularly when you are buying them at a deep discount. It’s no bargain if it doesn’t suit your purposes.

Do you know the Pros and Cons of Wet vs Dry Underwater Welds?

Posted on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 8:30 am

by Sammy L Droste

Underwater welding is an important part of any industry where structures are underwater, or shipping is involved. It doesn’t matter whether the structure is a fully submerged pipeline, a partially underwater platform, or a ship. Metal structures need to be repaired, and not all of them can be removed from the water.

Developing good technology for underwater welding is important. Ideally, an underwater weld ought to be strong enough to permanently be part of the structure. It should also be quick and cheap to implement, without being dangerous - unfortunately, no method can meet all of these standards.

Underwater welding has a number of risks, and must be done by specialists trained to use the equipment and take the appropriate precautions. Underwater welders may be employed by oil and gas industries, shipping companies or even the military.

Wet and dry underwater welding are the two basic types. Wet welding is when the weld is exposed to the water while being created. It’s a speedy, inexpensive welding method, and it’s commonly used on underwater structures, or when a ship can’t be put into dry dock.

The down side of wet underwater welding is that it’s not as structurally stable as a dry weld. Water can interrupt the welding process, cause hot and cold spots, or even explosive pockets of hydrogen and oxygen. Wet welds are almost always temporary, and don’t provide as great percentages of elongation as dry welds.

Wet underwater welds need to be repaired more frequently and require routine inspections for damage. This is an alternative to putting a ship into dry dock before scheduled, but in the long run, it’s not always the cheapest.

Dry underwater welding, also called hyperbaric welding, is usually carried out in a special chamber that isolates the weld from water. Often, this chamber contains an inert gas and is pressurized. The size of the chamber can vary from one large enough to contain all equipment, plus a welder, to small enough to only isolate the weld.

One variant of underwater welding developed by Neptune uses a very small chamber fulled with gas pressurized to one unit above the outside water pressure. This helps prevent contamination and lets the chamber be built quickly and easily. This is one of the least expensive forms of dry underwater welding.

In general, dry welding is considered expensive and time consuming. This is why it’s not commonly used for repairs that need to be done in a hurry, or without disrupting ordinary business.

Underwater welding is associated with a number of risks, including shock and decompression sickness. These problems mean that equipment must be correctly installed and insulated and procedure observed. The right precautions can prevent these potentially lethal dangers.

Every kind of underwater welding has its own problems and benefits. It’s important to know what you need out of a weld and the resources that are available. Check out all options, even if they’re new to the market, to make sure you get the right solution for your needs.
